As a Mechanical Supervisor in the Engineering and Technical Services (ETSV) Department, you will hold direct technical accountability for all mechanical systems on the power plant, including all critical auxiliaries. Reporting directly to the Systems Engineering Manager, you will serve as both a technical authority and an inspiring people leader, coordinating a dedicated team of mechanical systems engineers in the execution of their departmental mandates.
In this role, you will play a vital part in bridging day-to-day operations with strategic long-term planning. You will continuously set up, monitor, and trend system indicators, proactively adjusting maintenance strategies or operating specifications to ensure asset reliability, safety, and operational excellence.
In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
- Lead, mentor, and supervise a team of mechanical systems engineers spanning Steam Turbine, Boiler and Balance of Plant (BOP) Systems including their competency needs and individual development programs.
- Set up, monitor, and trend critical plant mechanical system indicators and auxiliaries to make proactive adjustments to Maintenance Strategies or Operating Technical Specifications (OTS).
- Manage high-impact asset integrity programs, including the Boiler Tube Leak Management program, Turbine Centerline Health programs, and the Balance of Plant (BOP) health program.
- Formulate the Life of Plant Plan (LOPP) and the 5-year Technical Plan, providing key input to the engineering budget and managing all expenditures in the mechanical section.
- Provide specialised technical engineering resources, guidance, and expertise for plant outages, major maintenance activities, and system modifications.
Outcomes Expected and Responsibilities:
Technical Program Management & Mechanical Asset Stewardship
- Establish, manage, and optimize core technical health programs, including the Boiler Tube Leak Management program, Turbine Centerline Health programs, and the Balance of Plant (BOP) health program.
- Act as the primary technical interface with equipment Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to secure continuous, high-level technical support.
- Supervise and coordinate all maintenance activities that require engineering technical guidance/support for boilers, steam turbines, pumps, fans, conveyors, cooling systems, and related auxiliary equipment.
Maintenance Strategy, Operations Support & Technical Governance
- Set up robust, reliability-centered maintenance strategies for power plant mechanical systems based on OEM manuals, troubleshooting techniques, and industry best practices using the latest RBO processes.
- Formulate and implement comprehensive preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs to maximise uptime.
- Set up and govern the Operating Technical Specifications (OTS) for all mechanical systems and auxiliaries.
- Assist in complex plant transients, start-up, and shutdown operations, and oversee system modifications to optimise plant performance.
- Evaluate operational data to consider plant redesigns or structural modifications whenever necessary to improve performance or eliminate chronic failures.
Long-Term Strategy, Budgeting & Expenditures
- Compile, review, and continuously update the long-term Life of Plant Plan (LOPP) alongside the strategic 5-year Technical Plan.
- Coordinate the approval process for all required capital expenditures and align departmental activities directly with broader ETSV strategies.
- Manage associated departmental expenditures, formulate the annual mechanical engineering budget, and execute financial controls monitoring.
Incident Resolution & Statutory Compliance
- Ensure strict adherence to all corporate safety, environmental, and statutory regulations across all mechanical operations.
- Conduct exhaustive root cause analysis (RCA) on equipment incidents and malfunctions that have caused Plant derations or trips to drive continuous improvement, safety, and reliability.
- Make high-pressure, informed engineering decisions during plant incidents to maintain asset integrity.
Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management
- Lead, direct, and manage mechanical engineers, overseeing key ‘HR roles as a leader’ such as recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
- Manage relationships and align engineering initiatives with all internal departments (Supply Chain, Legal, Finance), project partners, contractors, OEM vendors, and suppliers.
To Succeed in this Role, we need someone who:
- Holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical engineering field.
- Is preferably a Licensed Professional Engineer or holds equivalent recognised technical certifications.
- Has a minimum of eight (8) years of professional experience in the Power Generation Industry, specifically in an engineering or technical role.
- Possesses expert-level knowledge of power generation technology and processes, specifically mechanical engineering systems in a utility-scale coal-fired power plant setting.
- Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of engineering standards (ASME), industry best practices, safety regulations, and statutory requirements.
- Has expert knowledge of rotating equipment, boiler systems, steam turbines, pumps, valves, heat exchangers, piping systems, thermal processes, and coal handling systems.
- Is highly proficient in reading and interpreting complex technical drawings, schematics, and P&ID diagrams.
- Demonstrates a high proficiency in Google Applications and MS Office Applications.
- Is a resilient professional with strong decision-making, problem-solving, project management, and time-management skills in high-pressure scenarios.
- Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting, team alignment, and inter-departmental coordination.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Utility Mechanical Leadership: Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary mechanical teams in large-scale thermal power plant ideally in a once-through Boiler application.
- Advanced OEM Alignment: Demonstrated expertise in managing OEM relationships and translating technical manuals into reliability-centered maintenance strategies.
- Long-Term Asset Planning: Experience compiling 5-year technical views, capital asset strategies, and Life of Plant Plans (LOPP).
- High-Pressure Problem Solving: Expert ability to direct technical teams and conduct rapid, thorough root cause analyses during unplanned outages or transients.
