Geotechnical Engineer Specialist
The Geotechnical Specialist provides advanced technical expertise in the end-to-end delivery of geotechnical services from preliminary investigation and site characterization to detailed foundation design and construction support. The role ensures that ARI’s renewable energy projects, particularly solar and wind developments, are supported by robust geotechnical data, sound engineering designs, and safe, cost-effective construction practices. The Specialist is expected to operate independently, supervise external contractors, and integrate geotechnical findings into civil and structural designs to mitigate risks and enhance project viability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Site Investigation and Characterization
- Plan, supervise, and participate in geotechnical investigations, including boreholes, in-situ testing, groundwater monitoring, and laboratory testing.
- Supervise third-party contractors during fieldworks to ensure compliance with technical specifications, safety standards, and quality control.
- Evaluate site conditions for soil/rock properties, groundwater behavior, geohazards, and hydrochemistry relevant to project development.
- Data Analysis and Reporting
- Analyze and interpret field and laboratory results to define design parameters.
- Review and validate contractor deliverables, including geotechnical, geophysical, geohazard, and hydrochemical reports.
- Prepare and present comprehensive geotechnical reports and recommendations for project decision-making.
- Engineering Design and Recommendations
- Perform slope stability, settlement, bearing capacity, and ground–structure interaction analyses.
- Develop foundation designs and provide geotechnical input for civil/structural design packages (e.g., wind turbine foundations, solar array supports, substations, and slope protection works).
- Recommend ground improvement and slope stabilization measures as needed.
- Construction Support
- Provide geotechnical expertise during construction activities, ensuring design compliance and addressing ground-related challenges.
- Recommend corrective or optimization measures to reduce risks, delays, and costs.
- Contractor and Resource Management
- Review and evaluate technical and commercial proposals from geotechnical service providers.
- Ensure efficient mobilization of internal and external resources to deliver investigation and design outputs on time and within budget.
- Compliance and Safety
- Adhere to ARI’s Health, Safety, Environmental, and Social (HSES) standards across all phases of work.
- Ensure geotechnical equipment and testing tools are regularly calibrated and properly maintained.
Other Functions and Responsibilities
- Contributes to a high-performing team by being engaged in regular and ongoing conversations about achieving targets, improving capabilities and performance, and practicing self-discipline.
- Practices courageous authenticity while being mindful of mutual trust, support, and respect that leads to a psychologically-safe environment for their team.
- Supports Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion by respecting others' strengths, views, and experiences, encouraging teamwork that translates to better team performance and business results.
- Follows standard operating procedures and complies with all requirements necessary to perform their job to the best of their abilities.
- Adopts the organization's culture, values, and philosophy by upholding company policies, safety rules, and procedures
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a graduate of Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or Mining Engineering.
- Must be a Licensed Engineer or Geologist.
- Must have at least 5 years of relevant geotechnical engineering experience with strong exposure to site investigations, analysis, and design.
- Must have experience in foundation design and site-specific geotechnical analysis.
- Must be willing and physically able to perform fieldwork in remote and challenging environments, including hiking, trekking, and extended site assignments.
- Preferably with direct experience in renewable energy projects (solar and/or wind), including the design and supervision of turbine and solar farm foundations.
- Preferably with specialized training or postgraduate studies in geotechnical engineering, foundation design, or soil–structure interaction.
- Preferably with a strong background in geohazard assessment, hydrogeology, and ground improvement methods.
